Guidance, Counselling and Career Development Centre (GCCD)
The Challenge
The University of Ghana’s existing Careers and Counselling Directorate currently serves a student population
of more than 60,000 from a constrained, undersized facility. This limitation affects the University’s ability to
meet growing demands in mental health support, academic counselling, career readiness, and
innovation/entrepreneurship development. Students often struggle with stress, mental health challenges,
career uncertainty, and limited access to holistic support. The lack of a dedicated, purpose-built Centre also
inhibits potential partnerships, limits service capacity, and compromises the quality of interventions required
to prepare students for the rapidly evolving world of work.
Proposed Solution
The GCCD Project proposes the construction of a modern, fully integrated Guidance, Counselling and Career
Development Centre on the Legon campus. Designed as a one-stop hub, the Centre will provide free,
expanded services including mental health counselling, academic and personal guidance, career advisory
support, entrepreneurship training, innovation incubation, employer engagement, and mentorship
programmes. The project will be implemented through an independent Trust to ensure accountability and
transparency, with funds raised through private partners, alumni, corporates, and philanthropic networks. The
Centre will also incorporate revenue-generating facilities, co-working hubs, training spaces, consulting
services, to ensure long-term sustainability.
Project Objectives
- Expand and Integrate Core Student Support Services
- Build a Robust, Purpose-Built Infrastructure
- Strengthen Partnerships for Employability and Innovation
